Q. How does this book teach Hispanic children self-esteem?
A. Nasaria's Family portrays the love and kindness within the Hispanic family and gives positive insights into Hispanic customs and culture, which is sorely needed at this time in United States history. Currently, immigrants, particularly Hispanic, be they legal or illegal, are denigrated, mistreated and denied basic human rights. In addition, some states, including Arizona, Oklahoma and others, have passed or are attempting to pass even more oppressive immigration laws, which encourage even harsher treatment of the Hispanic population.
With the current political furor, Nasaria's Family allows Hispanic children to see themselves and their culture in a very positive light and allows them to share their culture with other students in their social studies classes.
